Meet Cate D

15 Years—Where Did the Time Go? What an incredible milestone and celebration for the Greenwich Girls Flag Football League—15 years strong! It’s hard to believe how fast time has flown. It feels like just yesterday I was tagging along to register my older brother for flag football when a towering figure—what felt like a 7-foot giant—named Dee Fludd approached my 8-year-old self with a playful but curious smile and asked, “When are YOU going to play?”

At the time, I didn’t even know that was possible. Girls? Playing flag football? With the boys? I nervously laughed it off, wondering why this big, energetic man would ask me such a thing. But little did I know—that moment would plant a seed that would change the course of my life.

That evening, I went home and surprised my dad with a simple but powerful statement: “Sign me up. Let’s do it.”

Two seasons later, there I was—playing on the Cowboys with none other than Coach Dee Fludd at the helm. I was just thrilled to have the opportunity. But what meant the most was how Dee treated us girls on the team: not as sidekicks or outliers—but as equals, as teammates. He didn’t just include us. He empowered us.

By year three, Dee rolled out the red carpet and launched what would become a historic chapter in our town's story—the Greenwich Girls Flag Football League. Finally, girls like me—and so many of my friends—had a league of our own. A space where we could be competitive, fierce, and proud of what we were building.

(And not to brag—but I did go on to win three consecutive championships .)

When my playing days came to an end, I wasn’t ready to walk away. I began coaching 6-year-old girls for two years, sharing what I had learned and helping build the next generation of female athletes. On the side, I even helped referee games—because to be a great coach, you have to understand the game from every angle.

Looking back, I didn’t realize how much those years would shape me. Those experiences were pivotal. They influenced what I studied, what I pursued in college, and ultimately the path I’m walking today.

I’ve always loved sports and being part of a team. But this was something different. This was pioneering. This was about helping create something brand new in our community—starting from scratch and building something that would last.

That journey led me to the University of Arkansas, where I served as a bullpen catcher and manager for the Women’s Softball Team. I majored in Sports Management with a minor in Marketing, graduating in 2020. My first job out of college? An inside sales role with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With grit, determination, and the relentless mindset sports teaches you, I worked my way up—and today, I’m proud to say I’m the first-ever woman Senior Group Sales Account Executive in the sales department for the Thunder—an NBA Championship organization.

Talk about a full-circle moment.

To be a woman in a male-dominated industry, breaking barriers and continuing to open doors for the next generation of women and girls—it’s not just a job, it’s a mission.

Every single day, I’m reminded that the impossible is, in fact, possible. And it all started with one moment. One man. Two words: Dee Fludd.

So to every young girl lacing up cleats, to every coach mentoring a new player, and to every parent cheering from the sidelines—thank you. You’re part of something bigger than a game. You’re building legacy.

Congratulations on 15 amazing years, Greenwich Girls Flag Football. Here’s to many more seasons, more champions, and more young girls realizing their power—on and off the field.

Let’s keep breaking the glass.
